Independents, including 'Son of the Soil', barely register with voters

There were only two independent candidates in yesterday's General Election and by all accounts they did not perform as well as some would have thought.

It had been suggested that perceived discontent with the leadership of Premier Ewart Brown and the PLP's performance in general would cause disgruntled voters to select alternative representation for the House.

'Son of the Soil' businessman Harold Darrell, the man responsible for leaking damning confidential Police dossiers to the media relating to the BHC investigation, hoped to capitalise on allegations of scandal which has dogged the PLP Government for months.

There were 771 ballots cast yesterday in Pembroke Central, where Mr. Darrell ran against the PLP's Wayne Perinchief and the UBP's Austin Warner.

However, Mr. Darrell garnered just 24 votes, matched up against winner Mr. Perinchief's 439 votes and Mr. Warner's 308 votes.

Mr. Darrell had said he received positive feedback on the doorstep and did not subscribe to the UBP's philosophy and believed the PLP was out of touch with labour.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Roger Russell went head to head in Pembroke West Central against the victorious PLP candidate Neletha Butterfield and the UBP's Marilyn Steede.

With 823 ballots cast, Mr. Russell did somewhat better by capturing 43 votes, but it also proved that the independent candidates this time around were not spoilers as some had suggested.
