Government hopes the building, which belongs on the Bermuda Industrial Union on Union Street in Pembroke, will become the new home for the Bermuda Government Archives.

According to a Planning notice this week, the Ministry of Works and Engineering has applied for a change of use for the Union Street building.

The notice outlined that the 8,400-square-foot premises will undergo minor modifications.

Changes in the basement will include removal of the platform for the freezer unit, removal of open plywood partitions, levelling and retiling the floor and repainting all walls.

Alterations to the ground floor will include erecting stud partitions between pillars at the front of the building to create a reception area, installation of a door from reception to main area, and removal of all unnecessary equipment.

Changes in the upper floor area will include blocking the entrance to the BIU centre, using a room as a tele-exchange and network room, installing new locks for all doors, and installing air conditioning among other things.

General modifications will include redecoration, lighting, new locks and electric installation.

In addition to all this, the interior will be completely redecorated.

Government has made plans to begin moving the Government Record Centre, from the Cable & Wireless-owned building on Barry Road, St. George's, to their new location by mid-to-late November.
