New youth counselling service attracts top-notch staff

With another addition to its counselling staff, a free service for young people at risk is being further strengthened.

Edward Rewan, who has a Masters in social work and is pursuing further certification, joined The Bermuda Youth Counselling Services (BYCS) shortly after the centre's move at the beginning of the month.

The BYCS is now located in its permanent home at 27 Front Street.

Mr. Rewan told The Royal Gazette he was looking forward to working with young people and was optimistic about BYCS's future.

"I believe the service will succeed because it is focussed on the youth,'' said Mr. Rewan. "It allows the youth to have an outlet to voice their concerns.'' And Eudora Browne-Zuill, the BYCS programme director, said the centre will benefit enormously.

She said "referrals are still pouring in on a daily basis'' after nearly five months of operation.

And a third counsellor is in the process of being hired.

"It's not a question of how many we can take,'' she continued. "That's the million-dollar question. It's too early to tell how many we can handle.'' But she said she was hopeful the last position would be filled by July and that the centre would be fully operational by September.

The free adolescent service will introduce group sessions and a family support group in July.

"A family group will help members from different families to share knowledge,'' said Mrs. Browne-Zuill.

"And it help them to take care of themselves,'' she added. "Above all it will help them to know that they're not alone and that there is always help.''
