Senator in `lucky escape' from crash

walking away from a car crash with minor injuries.

The Progressive Labour Party Senator suffered cuts to his head and bruising after his silver Mitsubishi Colt collided with a white Suzuki Swift travelling in the opposite direction on South Shore Road near Devondale Road, Devonshire, shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday.

Mr. Smith said he lost control of his car and when he opened his eyes after the crash he realised he had hit the other vehicle. He said he had been working extremely hard preparing a report for the past three nights and staff at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital put the crash down to exhaustion.

A Police spokesman said the Mitsubishi Colt "crossed over the lane enough so there was a collision with the white car''.

Mr. Smith, 66, and the 84-year-old male driver of the other car, were taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment for minor injuries but released shortly afterwards.

Mr. Smith said last night that he had been travelling from St. George's to Hamilton for a meeting at the Bermuda Industrial Union's Credit Union when the collision occurred.

He said: "I don't know what happened and when I opened my eyes I saw I had hit the car. I know I heard a thump. I know that I was exhausted and I lost control and it was a lucky escape.

"My first concern was to see that the other person was all right. He was standing up and he looked okay. He was much older than me and I saw that he had bruises.

"A couple of gentlemen sitting on the sidelines were kind enough to let me use a cellular to get in touch with my wife and I'm very grateful.'' Mr. Smith said he was very dazed when he got out of his car and did not look at the position of the cars, but on-lookers told him his car was in the wrong lane. He spent three hours in hospital and praised staff for their prompt attention.

Mr. Smith, the manager of the BIU Credit Union, said hospital staff made him undergo tests to see if a heart problem had contributed to the crash.

He added: "The hospital attributed it to the fact that I was exhausted for the last couple of nights.'' A Police spokesman refused to name either man, but said the other driver was from Warwick.
