CURE releases brochure on Cup Match, emancipation
In an initiative to enhance the community's Cup Match celebrations, the Commission for Unity and Racial Equality (CURE) has created a brochure about the history of the holiday and Emancipation Day.
CURE is inviting the public to enjoy the holiday by recognising the historical and cultural importance of Emancipation Day, all of which can be found in the brochure.
The idea came from a proposal from the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Bermuda where CURE was challenged to offer ideas of how the public could celebrate the holiday.
The result is the brochure, "2008 Emancipation Day — A Day for Reconciliation and Reflections" which will be mailed Islandwide during the month of July.
According to a press release: "The brochure captures the history of Cup Match from the perspective of emancipation and invites the people of Bermuda to engage simple, practical and purposeful ways to help heal divisions caused by racial, cultural and ethnic differences."
CURE has partnered with Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB), National Association for Reconciliation (NAR), Human Rights Commission (HRC), Amnesty International, Imagine Bermuda 2009, Baha'is of Bermuda and the Bermuda Race Relations Initiative (BRRI) for the initiative.
In addition to the brochure, CURE will have a pre-Cup Match weekly quiz beginning this morning and running every Wednesday morning until July 30 on Hott 107.5.
Prizes include the opportunity to win two tickets to the game.
Post-Cup Match feedback on the reconciliation initiatives applied by community members will be engaged on the morning show on Hott 107.5 on August 6.
All members of the public are encouraged to participate.
