Police to target riders with unfastened helmets
Unfastened helmets have been a major contributing factor to injury or death, according to the Bermuda Police Service.
Police have been focusing on a very specific traffic programme called STEP — Strategic Traffic Enforcement Programme — since last week Wednesday.
For the next two weeks, speed, helmet straps and tint will continue to be the focus of the Road Policing Unit along with the STEP programme.
In the following two weeks, there will be a rotation on new offences to be targeted.
They have been increasing capacity in the Roads Policing Unit to address anti-social road behaviour.
Since then, officers have targeted speed, helmet straps, tint and illegal licence plates.
Investigations into fatal road collisions have indicated that helmets not being fastened have been a contributing factor to injury or death.
More than 200 moving violation summonses have been written since the initiative was announced.
The Community Action Teams and watch patrols have been supporting the initiative as well.
