'Changed man' given a chance after drug offence

A man in possession of drug paraphernalia was given a conditional discharge in court after admitting he was a changed man.

Abdul Yusef Evans, 39, of Cove Valley Lane, St. George's, was caught on November 1, last year with drug equipment in his possession.

Magistrates' Court heard that Police on mobile patrol travelling east on York Street, in St. George's, spotted a motorcycle making a dangerous turn.

Police stopped the rider, Evans, who was seen fidgeting with his jacket pocket. They decided to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found one pocket tube, a steal tube, a razor and a glass plate in his possession.

Police took Evans to Southside Police Station and cautioned him to return on March 25. A laboratory analysis showed there was residue on the equipment for cocaine and diamorphine, however Evans never returned to the Station.

Evans admitted he had struggled with a drug addiction in the past, but said he had been clean for two months.

He said: "I have turned over a whole new leaf. I am trying to do things differently in my life.

"I've got a daughter that's 20, so I stopped and took a look at myself and tried to make a change. I've made a gallant effort.

"I was caught up at the time (of the offence) I really didn't care about myself at the time.(But) I've been trying to get myself clean- taking it one day at a time."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner encouraged Evans to stay away from drugs and handed him a conditional discharge, on the condition that he continues with drug treatment for the next 12 months.
