Road pursuit teenager admits string of offences

A 17-year-old Sandys resident who led police on a high-speed chase on Wednesday has admitted to all but one of the charges against him.

Marcus Robinson, of Beacon Hill, pleaded guilty to charges of taking a motorcycle without consent, theft, driving while disqualified by age and failing to stop for a police officer.

Robinson denied the charge he assaulted a mobile patrol officer by attempting to knock the officer off his motorcycle.

The court heard that two mobile patrol officers were on patrol on South Road, in Paget, when they spotted Robinson riding west and began to follow him. After noticing the officers Robinson began to act visibly nervous, before accelerating away and coming to a stop in order to avoid a collision. Robinson then swerved toward one of the officers, knocking the officer into the other lane, prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the court.

The high speed pursuit, which began around 2pm on Rural Hill, South Road, ended in a foot chase after Robinson dropped the cycle and attempted to flee on St Michael’s Road.

With assistance from residents and the K9 unit, officers were later able to apprehend Robinson, who appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to face the charges.

Defence attorney Rick Woolridge asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to delay sentencing pending a Social Inquiry Report, psychological evaluation, and psychiatric evaluation.

Robinson was released on $1,000 bail with one surety, under the condition that he reside with his father and submits to a curfew between 6pm and 8am.

He will be sentenced on March 21.
