There wasn’t a dry eye in Agape House as a woman fulfilled her “dying wish” to marry the man of her dreams.

Malinda O’Connor, who is terminally ill with a rare form of cancer, and Jamel Binns pledged to love each other for the rest of their lives as family, friends and Agape staff joined in celebration.

The couple were said to be the first to get married at Agape House which provides end-of-life care and whose mantra is “living and achieving the best possible quality of life for every single moment”. On the day they sealed their love this week, the bride said: “I feel good. I appreciate everyone coming today and I am very grateful to everyone who showed up.”

An emotional Mr Binns thanked Malinda’s family for “putting up” with him, adding: “Thank you for letting me have your momma as my wife.”

He said later: “It has been long awaited. I procrastinated for a long time and now it is official that the love of my life is with me for the rest of my life.”

The daughters of the bride, Arlena, Avita and Tyneisha, were all present on Thursday to see their mother on one of the happiest days of her life.

Avita told The Royal Gazette: “They have been together for 11 years and she has always wanted to get married.

“I wanted to make her happy so she can live peacefully for the rest of her life.

“She was excited last night — she didn’t really sleep, she was up all night because she was so excited. She said she wanted everyone out of the room on her wedding night!

“This was her dying wish so we wanted to make her wish and dream come true which we did with the help of Agape House and Friends of Hospice — especially Cathy Belvedere. They really helped to plan this wedding in just three days — they love their patients and try to fulfil any wishes or dreams they may have.”

Her mother’s type of cancer is extremely rare — she has melanoma in her sinuses. Avita added: “She was diagnosed in November, 2015. The treatment went well but then they had a turn and the cancer spread to her brain so she has been through a lot within less than a year.”

Maid of honour Nichole Williams added: “Malinda has always been inspiring to me, she has always had a strong faith right up to now.

“I will always cherish her. She deserves every bit of happiness.” The wedding ceremony was officiated by Reverend Eugina Dean.

She said of the couple: “They have loved each other for 11 years and they will fulfil a dream that comes from their heart and we know where those dreams come from — they are an essence of God that is within us.”
