Seniors were treated to an afternoon of entertainment and thanks at the Bermuda Housing Trust’s annual tea.The event, at St Paul’s Church hall in Paget, celebrated the contributions made to the island by the non-profit organisation’s 196 tenants.Vance Campbell, a Progressive Labour Party senator who is the Junior Minister of Public Works and the deputy chair of BHT, highlighted the Government’s commitment to older people.He said: “You can rest assured that seniors are a priority of this Government. “Our efforts to lower the cost of healthcare are ongoing and we continue to work with the Bermuda Housing Trust to deliver affordable housing for seniors.“We stand proudly on your shoulders and are committed to honouring your years of service to Bermuda.”Mr Campbell was joined at the tea on February 2 by his fellow PLP senator Ianthia Simmons-Wade, the Junior Minister of Health and for Cabinet, and Claudette Fleming, the executive director of Age Concern Bermuda.Seniors were entertained by musicians Gene Steede, who is a BHT tenant, Raven Baksh and Mike Hind, as well as Vernette Dorian, a poet, and Hermine’s Faith, a mime troupe.John Barritt, the BHT chairman, said: “It was a tea-riffic afternoon and warmed all hearts on what was otherwise another cool Bermudaful winter day.“Having the opportunity to honour our seniors and treat them to an afternoon of fellowship, food and entertainment is something we look forward to every year and I thank all those involved in making this so successful. “The greatest service the trust can provide to Bermuda’s seniors in need, is access to quality, safe, affordable housing. We are passionate about this.“Affordable housing offers the most positive impact on our seniors’ quality of life and eases the burden placed on families who are supporting senior family members.”Butterfield and Vallis provided the food, while funding for the event came from AXA-XL. Moira Lindo and Lucy Monkman, staff at the insurance and reinsurance company, helped to serve. Raffle prizes were donated by Miles Market, The Marketplace and Judy Knight and Sharon Smith, who are BHT staff. The music and sound system was provided by volunteer MVM DJ Donovan Furbert.Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, was unable to attend the event but he was represented by his executive assistance Claudelle Richardson and Trina Bean, a political consultant to the minister.A BHT spokesman added: “We are thankful to all our volunteers, staff, vendors and sponsors who make this annual celebration possible.”
