Anderson double sinks Trojans
"We belong in the First Division,'' opined Somerset coach Randy Horton two weeks ago after his side had slipped to an unlucky FA Cup defeat against Boulevard.
Maybe so. And there can be no doubt that they at times play as exhilarating football as any other side in the league.
But their inability to finish promising moves and an occasional alarming lack of concentration at the back could yet cost them the place they think should be theirs.
This latest defeat on their home turf leaves them within touching distance of the bottom three and their four remaining ties are all against sides above them.
They were up against it from the moment that Chris Anderson gave the visitors a seventh minute lead with a beautiful curling free kick. Justice was done after Trojans goalkeeper Winslow Williams deliberately handled outside the box and luckily escaped with only a yellow card.
Somerset battled back and Shaun Riley's 20 yard effort was tipped away by Antoine Lightbourne. But Michael Brangman really should have levelled from a 35th minute corner.
Riley played it short to Karl Roberts and his pinpoint cross was headed over by Brangman from just five yards out. The home side were handed a lifeline moments after the break when Jelani Scott had his heels tapped in the area and Sean Simmons converted the penalty.
But Dandy Town, quick on the break, hit back on 64 minutes as Paul Cann rounded off a fine jinking run by Damon Ming, their best player on the night.
Anthony Burchall almost equalised for Trojans with a curling right foot shot that forced Lightbourne into a spectacular tip over and Roberts broke free down the right only for his cross to fall behind his onrushing strikers.
But Chris Anderson then linked up with substitute Reginald Tucker four minutes from time to grab his second and put the tie beyond Trojans.
His reverse pass put Tucker in on goal but when his effort was blocked Anderson was on hand to tidy things up.
Wolves 9 Eagles 0 Ham Parish 3 St.David's 2 Wolves predictably disposed of the Eagles without much sweat last night at Devonshire Rec. to earn promotion to the First Division. And Hamilton Parish survived a late rally by third-placed St David's at Somerset Cricket Club to virtually assure themselves of joining them in the top flight.
Parish need one more point to be absolutely certain of going up but their goal difference is so superior to St David's that it would take some quite remarkable results to prevent them ascending.
Wolves' second-year coach Dennis Brown said: "Our main priority this season was to gain promotion and naturally we are quite happy to have accomplished this goal. "We had an excellent first half of the season, then got somewhat complacent after the Christmas holidays after winning nine games in a row. But our strength has been our togetherness combined with the fact that the community has rallied behind us.'' The addition of three experienced players would see the team compete satisfactorily next season, he said.
Once Eagles had two players, Roffins Hill and Jerome Richards, sent off for fighting each other after 75 minutes, Wolves were able to waltz to victory after managing just one goal before the break. Nathan Webb and Nirobi Smith struck four goals apiece while Ricardo Nesbitt got the other.
Parish, meanwhile, built up a three goal lead before almost allowing their nearest rivals for a promotion spot to grab a point.
Trinn Burgess gave them a 32nd minute lead before an own goal by Delan Hollis just before the break made it two. Corey Hill got his 13th goal of the season with a 54th minute strike.
But the second own goal of the night, this time by Clevon Hill gave St.
David's some hope in the 72nd minute and Shane Weeks grabbed a second a minute from time from close range.
