Coach Kenny's double strike kills off Wolves

(after extra time) Coach Kenny Thompson went from leading on the sidelines to leading on the pitch yesterday when he came on against Second Division Wolves and turned the match in North Village's favour with two extra-time goals at Bernard Park.

But the match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests as Wolves, last year's finalists, held their own in regulation time before being blown away by three goals in the space of seven minutes in extra-time.

Thompson, who has been playing for North Village Rams in the Commercial League this season, introduced himself into the game early in the second half with the teams level at 1-1.

Jamel Smith had put Village in front after 19 minutes with the first of his two penalties when Wolves goalkeeper Hewvonnie Brown charged into Nakia Smith at the near post as he tried to collect the ball from a corner.

Within four minutes Wolves were back level with Brown making amends. His long kick upfield was headed on by Khari Sharrieff for Nathan Webb whose shot was blocked. But Sharrieff followed up to smash home the rebound.

Aggressive play by Webb and Sharrieff unnerved the Village defence and on the half hour Michael Hansey was brought in for Cal Dill in the Village defence.

Dill had been booked minutes earlier along with Irving Romaine.

The match was still level when Thompson made another key substitution in the 58th minute, bringing on himself for youngster Davon DeGraffe. The move did not bring immediate results as it was Village who suffered another blow when Damon Wade went down with a serious leg injury after colliding with team-mate Hansey on the hour and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"My first concern right now is with Damon Wade whose injury looked really terrible,'' said Thompson afterwards. "I hope it looked worse than it is.

Damon has been very committed this season.'' Last night Wade was undergoing surgery but a hospital spokeswoman was unable to give details on the seriousness of the injury.

Right from the resumption of play, Wolves took the lead for the first time when Sharrieff streaked away down the right, cut in and beat Nyon Steede with a left-footed shot inside the near post.

Wolves went a man short 10 minutes into extra-time when Anthony Thomas was ejected for a second yellow card (fouling Nakia Smith), having been booked in the first half.

From the resulting free kick on the edge of the box, Thompson curled his kick into the far top corner with Brown well beaten. That goal was followed by another four minutes later by Thompson and it broke Wolves' spirit.

A low cross from the right by Smith was not collected inside the six yard box by Brown and the lurking Thompson smashed home the loose ball from close range.

Hansey made victory certain with the fifth two minutes into the second period of extra-time when he slipped through the middle of the Wolves defence after playing a one-two and then easily beat Brown with a low shot.
