Fahy, Troake finish in style
battle to fight as the World Championships came to an end.
Unlike the Chinese, who were caught and later suspended for drug use, Stephen Fahy and Stephen Troake will return from Perth, Australia, with some good news: Two Bermuda senior national records and five standards met for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Malaysia.
Each qualified for the Games in one more event yesterday; Troake in the 50-metre freestyle and Fahy in the 200m individual medley.
Troake, competing in the fifth of 11 heats, posted a time of 24.84 seconds, just under the qualifying standard of 24.90 and within three tenths of his personal best.
Fahy swan in the third of seven heats. He started strongly on the butterfly leg and passed smoothly over the backstroke, coach Richard Goodwin said. The breaststroke was something of a struggle but he finished strongly on the final freestyle lap for a time of 2:10.51. The standard was 2:13.90.
Both Fahy and Troake used very fast starts to their advantage. Reviewing reaction time statistics, available after each race, Goodwin said Fahy's start was consistently below .7 seconds, on par or better than that of Alexander Popov and Michael Klim. "Fahy continues to mature as a swimmer while Troake has acquitted himself well in his first senior meet,'' said Goodwin.
Fahy earlier qualified for the Commonwealth Games in the 100m freestyle and butterfly, while Troake made it in the 50 and 100m freestyle. Troake broke the national record in the 100m backstroke while Fahy shattered the 100m butterfly mark.
