Steede gives Stars the perfect start

Police 207 Captain Albert Steede stroked his third century of the season as champions Western Stars began the defence of their Knockout Cup title with a comprehensive 110-run victory over Police at Police field on Saturday.

Steede finished on 149 after three hours and six minutes, hitting 13 fours and two sixes, and sharing with fellow opener Treadwell Gibbons (25) an opening stand of 83.

Also in good batting form for Stars was veteran Ricky Brangman with 45.

Opener David Greenidge cracked a century for Police but his knock of 107, including 16 fours and a six, was insufficient to inspire a fightback as no other batsman made a decent contribution.

Cleon Scotland was the best bowler for Stars with four for 48 off 10 overs while Justin Robinson had two for 27 off six overs and JaJa Millett two for 36.

Somerset 266-9 Willow Cuts 218 Tony Cheeseman took four for 28 and Shaun Roberts struck 52 to lead last year's beaten finalists, Somerset, to a 48-run victory over rivals Willow Cuts at Somerset.

In addition to Roberts, who hit two sixes and six fours, Shane Hollis contributed 49 for Somerset while Francis Richardson scored 38 and Cheeseman 36.

Charles Swan took four for 33 for Willow Cuts, who had a solid start to their innings when openers Dwight Basden and skipper Dexter Basden put on 126, with Dwight scoring 59 and Dexter 55.

PHC 130 Devonshire Rec. 130 PHC came out winners in the first tie of the season, beating Devonshire on a faster scoring rate at the Rec.

PHC posted their runs off 23.1 overs while the home team took 27.4 overs to reach the same total.

Cleveland took just 12.5 overs to reach victory with opener Jason Simons undefeated on 22 and fellow opener Anthony Bascome scoring 18.

Bailey's Bay 339-8 Warwick 124 Captain Charlie Marshall blasted 100 and Jermaine Warner and Irving Romaine 53 apiece as Bailey's Bay romped to a 215-run win at Sea Breeze Oval.

Bay, who only just beat Warwick a week ago, made no mistake this time as an opening stand of 88 between Warner and Dennis Trott (24) laid the foundation for their big total. Quinton King took two for 42 and Jason Williams two for 68 for the visitors.

Warwick found runs hard to come by against some tight Bay bowling which reduced them to 62-6. Michael Stovell was the high man for Warwick with 21.

Burton Outerbridge claimed three for 27 from seven overs.

St. George's 216-9 Flatts 74 Herbie Bascome claimed four for 12 off six overs and Travis Smith three for six from 3.2 overs as St. George's enjoyed an easy 142-run win over Flatts at Wellington Oval.

Flatts were dismissed in just 23.2 overs with former St. George's player Andrew Richardson their high man with 24 at the top of the innings.

Eugene Foggo led the St. George's batting with 39 and Mark Ray scored 32, with the match reduced to 42-overs per team because of a late start. Derek Wright took two for 24 and Philip Burgess two for 22.

St. David's 195-8 Southampton 198-8 An unbroken ninth wicket stand of 32 between Ian Armstrong (14) and David Saltus (16) led Rangers to a two-wicket win over St. David's.

Olin Jones was high man Rangers with 41 while Clevie Wade scored 38.

Earlier Chris Foggo scored 35 to lead the St. David's batting while Glenn Blakeney scored 34.
