TeenagerWhitter still in the hunt
A singles yesterday, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Russell Dey.
And today the 14-year-old faces a formidable obstacle in the shape of defending champion, number two seed and Bermuda Davis Cup player Michael Way.
Last week, Whitter sprang a major surprise by knocking experienced Vernal Davis out of the A competition 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
He has also set his sights on winning the men's B singles after following up his elimination of number four seed Erwin Leader with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Sean O'Connell.
Whitter's B quarter-final will pitch him against David Geraghty, who is making his return to competitive tennis after a serious bike accident in France last September which left him in a coma for a week.
Sixteen-year-old Craig Bean has also made it to the B quarter-finals, where he meets Howard Cross today.
Another youngster still in the tournament is 14-year-old Federation Cup player Danielle Downey, who today meets number one seed Jill Finnigan in the women's A singles.
Top seed Vernal Davis was on the wrong end of another surprise result in the senior men's singles, when he went down 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to unseeded Wilfred Gonzalves.
Davis was serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set, but Gonzalves, who is also still involved in the A and B singles, fought back to win four games in a row.
