Vasco Express gathers speed
The Vasco Express keeps chugging along.
Next stop: The league championship.
Final destination: A potential -- and rare -- four-trophy season, one shy of an even rarer sweep of all the season's competitions.
But this is all premature; after all Vasco still need to win one of their three remaining contests -- or have their three challengers each lose one -- in order to clinch the league crown.
And in today's First Division nothing can be taken for granted, even though we're talking about a team who are now unbeaten in their last 20 matches following Saturday's victory over Colts at BAA Field.
Vasco have already won the Dudley Eve, are in the Friendship Trophy final and, in two weeks, play North Village in the FA Cup semi-finals.
They beat Colts 1-0 in the Friendship semi-finals last Wednesday, and three days later it was more of the same -- except worse.
Meeting for the fifth time this season, Vasco produced their most dominant game against the defending champions. They led 1-0 at the half and scored twice more in the second on long drives by Ascento Russell, sandwiched around a marker by Colts' Keishon Smith in the 73rd minute.
They have now scored 31 goals in their 15 matches -- equal to second place Dandy Town -- but, more importantly, have conceded a league low of only 16.
That's what happens when you have Timmy Figuerido in goal and a defence anchored by two guys (Derek Stapley and Paul Towlson) who never seem to get beat.
But on Saturday, it was Meshach Wade who stood out, his well-documented shunning of Regiment duties notwithstanding.
He scored the first goal on a move few players would even attempt, intercepting a pass, moving tentatively in and, spotting a slight opening between two Colts defenders, darting through and feigning just briefly before firing a low shot past 'keeper Troy Hall.
Minutes later, he nearly made it 2-0, moving in alone on Stapley's through ball only to be stopped by Hall from point blank range.
Russell can also thank Wade for his goals, both from well out and both with nearly unstoppable shots. A low rocket to the left from 20 yards six minutes into the second half was the first; a 25-yarder high into the right corner after Shawn Simmons redirected Wade's pass into the middle in the 31st minute was the second.
Figuerido made a rare mistake for Colts' lone goal, getting caught off his line as Smith, swinging in from the left wing, chipped a shot into the empty net. But the Vasco 'keeper got his revenge with two minutes to play, diving to his right to stop Sekai Waldron on a penalty. Worse for Colts, Mark Ray raced in for the rebound and slid a shot just wide of the far post.
