Colts suffer injury crisis
their league campaign tomorrow against Southampton Rangers in the newly named Premier Division.
Captain Shannon Burgess and his central defensive partner, Makonnen Hollis, and front player Keishon Smith are all definitely out because of leg injuries while Jerry Laws has a pull below his calf though he could possibly play.
Smith has an ankle injury and is on crutches while Hollis is suffering from strained knee ligaments which could keep him out for five or six weeks.
The fifth player on the injured list is new signee Wayne Henry, a Trinidadian midfielder of whom new coach David Furbert has high expectations.
Henry suffered back problems on the morning of last Tuesday's Martonmere Cup match and went to the doctor. By early evening the pain had eased and he played that night, which Furbert now admits was a mistake as he was taken off after just 20 minutes.
"He woke up on Tuesday morning and couldn't get out of bed because his back just stiffened up,'' explained Furbert of the 33-year-old schoolteacher who has just arrived on the Island.
"The doctor gave him some pills and by five in the afternoon he said it had loosened up and he was going to try it. We debated that but we put him in and it was a mistake.'' With so many youngsters in the team, Furbert sees Henry's experience in the middle as a vital ingredient.
"He was playing in New York with one of the B Division teams and he's a very experienced player,'' said Furbert, who returns to the coaching job with last year's coaches Ray Jones and Darrin Lewis still involved. Jones is now Furbert's assistant while Lewis is responsible for the goalkeepers and physical fitness.
The good news for last year's FA and Friendship champions is that their weakened defence will be strengthened by the return of Troy Hall who had been abroad and missed the Martonmere match when Colts went down 3-1.
Dandy Town and North Village, after two straight wins in the Martonmere Cup which qualifies them for the semi-finals, will be looking for their third straight wins this weekend.
Town are at home to Somerset Trojans as Reggie Tucker goes up against his former Somerset team-mates, while Village are at home to newly-promoted PHC in what could be one of the best games of the day.
The other matches see Wolves taking on defending champions Vasco at Devonshire Rec. while St. David's host their tenants Boulevard at Lord's.
In the First Division in which there are eight teams, Prospect play neighbours Devonshire Cougars at Police Field, St. George's are at home to Ireland Rangers, Hamilton Parish meet Somerset Eagles at Shelly Bay and Paget take on Social Club at White Hill.
Sidelined: Devonshire Colts' striker Keishon Smith (top) is one of at least four first team regulars expected to miss tomorrow's opening league game because of injury.
