City last night in a cup tie against Darlington at the Britannia Stadium.

But Shawn Goater was not so lucky, as the promotion hopes of his club Manchester City took a jolt with a surprising 2-1 home defeat by Stockport County.

Second Division Stoke, playing in the northern division first round of the Auto Windscreens Shield -- a knockout competition for lower division teams with a final at Wembley -- fell behind to their Third Division opponents inside four minutes.

But Lightbourne netted a 25th minute equaliser and an own goal put Stoke ahead before half-time.

Darlington equalised nine minutes from the end of normal time, but Lightbourne gave his team a 3-2 victory with the decisive goal three minutes into extra time.

Manchester City took the lead four minutes into the second half through defender Gerard Wiekens at Maine Road against local rivals Stockport.

But Alan Bailey equalised for the visitors in the 65th minute and then a Tony Dinning penalty four minutes from time gave County all three points and denied City an opportunity to climb back to the top of the First Division.

WESTCHESTER SHARE GOODWILL LEAD GLF Westchester share Goodwill lead Westchester Hills and Suffield Country Club share the lead with a 36-hole net total of 116 after the second round of the Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament yesterday.

And although the local challenge from joint overnight leaders Port Royal fell away yesterday, the Southampton Princess team led by the Island's youngest professional, 20-year-old Andrew Trott, moved to within one shot of the lead.

Trott and amateur team-mates Paul Hayward, Ray DeSilva and Levy Rodrigues posted a net 58 at Port Royal to follow their 59 at Riddell's Bay on Monday.

The Westchester foursome of professional Kevin Morris, Frank Bensel, Joe Christiano and Vic Pizzolato shot 62 at the Mid Ocean Club to follow their opening-round 54 at Castle Harbour.

Morris said: "Mid Ocean is a tough course, so we played pretty well. It was windy starting off and we got off to a slow start, but we got going when it calmed down.

"We've been coming here a long time and we've never won it, but we tied for second eight or nine years ago. We've never played Riddell's Bay before, so we're looking forward to going there on Thursday.'' The team event takes a break today for the Goodwill Professional Tournament at Port Royal, where Morris will be looking to add to the $1,250 he won last week thanks to a fourth-place finish in the Black Seal Invitation.

"I didn't play a lot of golf back home in November, but now I'm feeling a bit more comfortable playing,'' added Morris.

Suffield, from Connecticut, roared into contention with a 55 at Riddell's Bay -- the best score of the day. Stan McLennan leads the team which also includes Mark Griffin, Jim Cowhey and Jack Carey.

Garden City's 61 at Castle Harbour left them tied for second with Princess, two strokes clear of Bedrock and Wee Burn, while Port Royal's 68 on their home course meant they fell back to six shots off the lead. Navesink and Vermont share the lead in the gross division on 128, one ahead of both Metuchen and Garden City.
