Jan Brewer narrowly defeated fellow national team player John Stout in a thrilling final over the weekend to become the 1998 Bermuda Squash Racquets

A packed audience was treated to a fine display of controlled squash. In the opening game, which Stout clinched 9-7, both players jockeyed for the `T' position by manoeuvring each other from corner to corner.

Brewer drew level in the second, winning by a 9-5 margin and the stage was set for a nailbiting third game.

This proved a seesaw battle that saw both players produce some dazzling winning volleys. Brewer twice served for the game at 8-7 but Stout hung in and clawed back to 8-8.

Brewer "set two'' (chose to play to 10) and Stout stole another point to give him game ball at 9-8. Another long gruelling rally ensued which ended with Stout hitting a drop shot into the tin.

Brewer served but Stout came straight back to face his second game ball. Once again, Brewer forced an error and this time seized the opportunity to then clinch the game 10-9.

Stout put up a spirited fight in the fourth game but struggled to get the ball deep enough to trouble Brewer who dominated play throughout, eventually winning 9-3.

In the ladies top division round robin contest, Janine Bentley reaped the benefit of a year of dedicated training to take the title. Michelle Eyles finished second and was the only player to take a game off a very focused Bentley.

Junior national team members Melissa Harney, Stephen Smith and Alex Joell gained respect from their senior opponents by taking their respective divisional titles.

MOTOCROSS SCR The Panchaud brothers won their respective 80cc classes on Sunday at Coney Island in the latest round of the Pepsi Nationals.

Craig Panchaud added another 45 points to his 80 Modified total while Steven Panchaud had two firsts and a fourth in the 80cc. Jimmy Lee Weaver was second with three seconds and Sean DeSilva third after two thirds and a first.

The 60cc class was won by Jakai Brimmer with a hat-trick of wins over Gary Cann who finished second in one moto despite running out of gas near the finish. He had two seconds and a third while Brandon DeSilva finished the day with a second to go with two thirds in the first motos.

Howard Paynter won the 125 C class with three wins, well ahead of Carlston Burgess in second with a second, third and fifth. Wentworth Tucker was third with two fifths and a second.

Aaron Pace enjoyed another three wins in the 125 B class ahead of Charles Butterfield with Jamal Hassell third. Ricardo Nottingham won the 250cc class, taking over the lead from Duprey Joell.

In the Pee Wee 50 class Jonte Smith was the lone competitor.

SOCCER SOC An error in the referee's paperwork which was submitted to the Bermuda Football Association office on Monday incorrectly had Robin Hood winning their Commercial League match against Lobster Pot 2-0 on Saturday.

The referee credited the goals according to the numbers on the goal scorers' jerseys, noting that Simon Turner and Andy Robinson scored the goals in a home win.

But, in fact, it was Tim Brown and Andy McCulloch who netted from headers to give Lobster Pot victory.

Brown opened the scoring after about a half hour and McCulloch made it 2-0 late in the second half.

The result changes the positions at the top of Group A where defending champions BAA Wanderers now take over sole possession of first place on 32 points with Robin Hood, who led on goal difference going into the weekend, slipping to third place.

Lobster Pot leapfrogged into second spot, two points behind the leaders and one more than Robin Hood. All three teams have three games remaining.
