BRIDGE BDG Hundreds of players from Canada and the US descended on Bermuda over the weekend to play in the 39th annual Regional Bridge Tournament at the Southampton Princess.

The tournament got underway on Saturday with more than 100 tables competing for the Ernie Owen Memorial Pairs Trophy. Winners were Michael Cornes, formerly of Bermuda and now residing in England, and Henry Bethe of New York.

On Sunday, the tournament moved in to high gear with the two-session Masters and Non-Master Pairs championships. Some of the top names in professional bridge dominated the main event, with Russ and Sheila Ekablad of Rhode Island coming out winners.

Local players failed to place in the top ten, but it was a different story in the Non Masters Pairs, where Malcolm Curry and Bill Spencer won and other local players claimed five of the next six spots.

The tournament continues at the Southampton Princess this week.
