Soccer focus turns to FA Cup
Cup will be determined this week when three double-headers are held tonight, tomorrow and Thursday night.
The games were postponed in mid-December because of bad weather which allowed only two matches to be completed as Southampton Rangers and Wolves clinched places in the next round.
At BAA Field tonight two more places should be confirmed for the February 15 quarter-finals as Vasco take on Hotels in the 7.00 opener and PHC meet Devonshire Colts at 9.00.
Vasco, having started 1998 by winning the Dudley Eve, have their sights set on three more trophies by the end of the season -- the league which they lead by five points, the Friendship in which they are in the semi-finals, and the FA Cup.
The Portuguese club are unbeaten in seven league and cup games this month, including a 3-0 victory over Hotels who have slipped into the relegation zone.
Even without Paul Towlson who missed Sunday's match because of too many yellow cards, Vasco proved too strong for PHC despite going a goal down midway through the first half.
Towlson will return after that one match ban and should fit right back into the middle of the defence alongside Kentoine Jennings.
In tonight's second match, both PHC and Devonshire Colts will be trying to end recent poor form.
Colts' only hope of silverware this season appears to be in the cup competitions where they are also in the semi-finals of the Friendship.
However, they could have their hands full against a PHC team that beat them recently in the league to end a nine-game winless run.
Tomorrow, two more interesting games are scheduled as Second Division teams try to upstage First Division opponents. St. David's take on Dandy Town in the opener with Prospect meeting Devonshire Cougars in the nightcap.
Prospect recently held Cougars to a draw in the cup and will be just as determined in this replay, though Cougars should be favourites, especially after their weekend thrashing of North Village.
Village will be looking to finish off St. George's on Thursday night at Somerset while Somerset and Boulevard will clash in the 9.00 match. Village were leading St. George's 2-0 in the original tie before the match was abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch at Bernard Park.
It was incorrectly stated that Wolves had 30 points at the top of the Second Division standings after the weekend games. They in fact have 28, three more than Hamilton Parish who have a game in hand.
