Soccer officials attacked by fan

enraged Wolves supporter at the end of yesterday's Second Division match against St. George's at Wellington Oval.

Referee Irven Simmons and linesman Gregory Smith were both assaulted by the unidentified offender but managed to come away with minor injuries.

The irate Wolves fan -- believed to be in his early 20s -- stormed onto the pitch at the end of the match, which ended 0-0, and attacked the officials with an umbrella, striking Simmons on the lip and Smith in the eye.

Players and team officials quickly intervened and neither Simmons nor Smith required medical attention.

"I don't know what his troubles were, he just came at us at the end of the game waving that umbrella all over the place,'' said Simmons.

"But it wasn't that upsetting to us, especially after the Wolves players and officials came to our assistance. It's only sad to see somebody get that upset over a game.'' Simmons said he didn't know the reason for the fan's anger, although two Wolves players were sent off during the final 10 minutes.

Lanario Simmons got his marching orders after 70 minutes for challenging a player from behind, stopping him from scoring, while Julian Francis received his red card 10 minutes later for abusive language.

"I saw that particular fan waving his umbrella about and being very noisy during the game, but he wasn't troubling play in any way at the time. He was noticeable because he was the only person on the ground making such a fuss,'' said Simmons.

The referee said he didn't regard it as a particularly serious incident and was satisfied that Wolves officials would take action against the individual as they were familiar with him.

The matter, however, is likely to be viewed seriously by Bermuda Football Association chiefs who recently launched a massive offensive to tackle the problem of soccer violence.

BFA president Neville Tyrrell warned just two weeks ago that the remainder of the season's fixtures could be cancelled if another serious incident was reported.

The crackdown followed an incident at Somerset late last year when fighting broke out between spectators and a police officer, attempting to intervene, was stabbed.
