Wellman and Armstrong show promising early form
off their outdoor seasons with impressive performances in the United States, according to national coach Gerry Swan.
Swan reported that over the weekend Armstrong lowered his best 800 metres time with a 1:49.62 clocking at the George Mason University Spring Invitational Meet.
The Bermudian middle distance runner had begun his outdoor season towards the end of March at a meet in North Carolina State University where he ran 3:50.59 for the 1500 metres. That was followed by a 1:51.21 in his first 800 metres run of the season in Durham, North Carolina.
Triple jumper Wellman opened what should be a busy season for him, with the Pan-Am Games, World Championships and CAC Championships all coming up this summer, by placing first in Springfield, Missouri. Wellman had a leap of 56 feet, four and a half inches, in his first meet since last year.
Meanwhile, Jarita Dill, a student at Seton Hall University, was involved in 800 metre individual and relay events recently. In the individual event in Arkansas last month she clocked 2:11.3 while in the relay she ran a 2:10 leg for her school in the Penn Relays.
Another Bermudian student, Devon Bean, raced in two 100 metre events, running 10.78 in Pamoma, California and 10.68 in the Mt. SAC (San Antonio College) Relays, also in California where he is based. In between Bean competed in a long jump at Mt. SAC where he leapt 7.49 metres (24'7'').
On the home front, three athletes also performed well over the weekend. Damian Simmons, in his first meet of the season, set an 800 metres personal best time of 1:56.9 at the IAAF World Athletics Day Meet on Saturday.
At that same meet Gabriel Wilkinson improved his discus performance with a personal best throw of 39.3 metres, while Carifta Games medallist, Richard Walcott, continued to make steady progress. In a 600 metre race, Walcott ran 1:25.3 which was an improvement on the 1:27.5 he clocked two weeks previously.
Brian Wellman: faces busy summer schedule.
