Zebras desperate to dent Vasco title hopes

advantage at the top of the Coca Cola First Division tomorrow as the title race continues to gain momentum.

The Portuguese club, who broke a tie with Boulevard for top spot in midweek when they edged bottom team Devonshire Cougars, face another struggling side, PHC, at PHC Stadium.

Last weekend's loss by the Zebras to Somerset Trojans makes them all the more desperate for points as they will need to keep Somerset and Hotels in their sights if they are to pull clear of the relegation zone. But in Vasco, they couldn't have asked for tougher opponents.

PHC go into the match without tough defender Shawn Smith who was sent off in the Somerset match and is serving a one-match suspension.

It will be a homecoming for former Zebras pair Sammy Swan and Otis Steede who have been inspirational in the Vasco team this season. How PHC could have used Swan's goal scoring experience.

Should PHC pick up at least a share of the points, second-placed Boulevard will be hoping to capitalise just up the road at Southampton Oval where they meet Rangers.

Southampton are comfortably placed in mid-table, eight points ahead of the bottom two and too far out of first place -- nine points -- to be considered serious title contenders.

They did do something that no other team has managed this season in the league -- take all three points off Vasco -- and could still play the role of spoilers.

With nine points separating Vasco from fourth-placed Dandy Town, it would appear that the title race will be decided between three teams. For that reason Boulevard and North Village, a further point back in third place, cannot afford to let Vasco's lead get any bigger.

Village are at home to neighbours Devonshire Cougars in another key match, with Cougars eager to have striker Aljame Zuill back after a one-game suspension.

In tomorrow's other match Dandy Town take on Hotels at St.John's Field. That match was to have been the first night game at St. John's but was put back to Sunday because the new lights were was not ready.

Hotels, like the three teams below them, are hungry for points and three would certainly boost their hopes of survival in their first season back in the top flight.

Hotels last won in early December when they stopped Boulevard 1-0, but four games without a win has left them looking anxiously over their shoulders.

Tonight at Somerset the Trojans take on Devonshire Colts (9.00) whose defeat against North Village last weekend leaves them nine points away from the top spot. Colts will welcome back inspirational captain Shannon Burgess to boost their defence against a Somerset team that had their confidence lifted by a win over PHC.

Somerset and Colts will meet in a Junior League match tonight at 7.00.

In the Second Division, leaders Wolves could all but seal the first promotion spot with a victory at Wellington Oval against St. George's. A win would put Wolves on 30 points, one more than third-placed St. David's can finish with after their last five games which includes a meeting with Wolves on February 22.

St. David's are at home to Somerset Eagles, and with second-placed Hamilton Parish having the day off it would be a good chance for them to close in on second spot.

Presently, that gap is nine points with St. David's having a game in hand. But with only four games remaining after this weekend, time is running out for the Islanders to catch Parish who look favourites to join Wolves in the First Division next season.

In the other match Social club meet Paget at PHC Stadium.
