DeCosta so close to title

Father and son tandem Stephen and Andrew DeCosta are four races away from winning the coveted GP 125cc class in the Bermuda Moto Racing Club racing series.

The youngster is currently two points ahead of second place Bruce DeGrilla jr. in the race for the title with less than a handful of races left.

"The season is going well, I'm currently in first place in the points standings at the moment with four races left," said DeCosta. "This year is really close, all the riders are fighting for the championship."

And while the racing is intense in such a close year, DeCosta said the riders in the class are all friends.

"A lot of the riders in my category are the same age so we have a fun rivalry and it is exciting to have this type of thing around."

Andrew's father, Stephen, is also a proud man, noting that the time spent with his son keeps a good relationship between the pair.

Having raced for five years, in which Andrew DeCosta has always been close to winning titles while also winning a GP 125 and a mini bike title, his father believes more can be done to help the children in motorsports get opportunities that both DeGrilla jr. and Cody Sousa-Saints have coming up in the near future.

"The riding keeps him focused, we do this together as a father son tandem as well as coaching him as best as I can although he has pretty much taught himself," said Stephen DeCosta. "This is something that fathers should be doing, it keeps their kids off the street.

"It gives Andrew something structurally to do and keeps your competitive edge as well as helping the younger guys mentally. They can say that they have accomplished something and have goals that they can achieve if they put their mind to it."

And Stephen DeCosta believes that motor sport is something Government should be pumping money into, considering the opportunities it presents to its young competitors.

"We had a chance to ride in the Red Bull competition before it fell apart and with the economic climate it is hard to get sponsorships," he said.

"When you look at it, from football to cricket, they get the most funds while the motocross, moto racing and power boats get close to nothing in terms of money, so we are still pushing this and hopefully something will come of it."
