Strong start in qualifying event
Bermuda's under-14 team won their first two matches at the WJT Boyls North/Central American and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Dominican Republic.
Yesterday, the team of Antonio Warner, Mackai Whitter and Robert Bart defeated Suriname 3-0 to follow up their 2-1 victory over Aruba in their first match on Monday.
Yesterday, Warner beat Jayden Chan 6-1, 6-0 and Whitter stopped Dexter Koorndijk 6-0, 6-2 before Warner and Robert Bart defeated Chan and Caelan Verkuijl 6-1, 6-3 in the doubles division.
On Monday, Bermuda had a tougher match against Aruba, losing the first singles match. Hugo Fidler beat Robert Bart 6-4, 6-1. Whitter was a game down in his singles match against Gijs Fidler, 6-2, before turning it around with 6-4, 7-5 wins to win a three-setter.
Warner and Whitter then beat Gijs Fidler and Hugo Fidler 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the victory.
Bermuda will also have an under-14 girls team at the same tournament.
The team, coached by Terry Smith, will leave on Saturday. Asia-leigh Hollis, Jae Gibbons and Kumani Jackson are the three members of the team.
