Speakers lined up for the first virtual Bermuda Captive Conference have been announced.The conference will be online due to Covid-19 pandemic-related restrictions. The three-day event starts next Wednesday.The event had originally been scheduled for June, but was postponed to this month due to the coronavirus health crisis. Organisers decided to make it a virtual event, which is free to attend. Some of the industry’s top thought leaders will take part, and it will act as an opportunity to network directly with clients and prospects.Among the virtual speakers will be Daragh Maher, head of research Americas, at HSBC, and Henk Potts, director, investment strategy, Barclays Private Bank. They will speak at the session “The Economists’ Vision”.The economists will share viewpoints and an outside perspective on the global impacts on events from this past year, and the effect future developments may have on the captive industry.A session entitled “The Future for Captives is Bright” will features moderator Jasmine Desilva, business development manager — risk and insurance solutions, at the Bermuda Business Development Agency. Also in the session will be Alicia Skeete, vice-president, Aon; Danielle Moniz, manager, assurance — captive insurance, PwC Bermuda; and Shaine McCluskey, corporate risk manager and postgraduate, Cummins / Butler University.As young individuals in the captive industry, they will speak about their past experiences and how they have shaped their position in their current roles, and where they see the industry progressing and how it could change with a millennial workforce and their fresh perspective.There will be a Bermuda Monetary Authority update on regulatory developments in the captive space. This session will be moderated by Sarah Demerling, partner, corporate, finance and funds group, at Walkers Bermuda. The speakers are the BMA’s Mellisa Burgess, deputy director, licensing and authorisations, and Moses Muoki, deputy director — supervision (insurance).The panel will give an update on Bermuda’s regulatory environment and the BMA’s approach to innovation. In addition to the latest captive statistics, panellists will share an overview of the BMA and its risk-based supervisory regime, as well as the effects of Covid-19 on the Bermuda captive market.
