Cougars gunning for more silverware

Devonshire Cougars players, coaches and supporters celebrate winning the FA Cup at the National Sports Centre over Somerset Trojans in the season finale last season. The two sides will open up the season in the Charity Cup at Goose Gosling Field tomorrow night.

Triple Crown champions Devonshire Cougars will be looking to start the new season the way they finished the last campaign — with a win.Cougars meet Somerset Trojans in tomorrow night’s Charity Cup at Goose Gosling Field with the two teams battling for the first piece of silverware up for grabs.Cougars claimed the Premier Division title, FA Cup and Friendship champions last season while Trojans were Dudley Eve champions.Cougars’ skipper Chris Caisey jr said it’s all about ironing out a few wrinkles before the league and Dudley Eve competition kicks off.“We are looking at this game as an avenue to see were our fitness is and if we can apply what the coach has shown us during the pre-season,” Caisey told The Royal Gazette.“Everybody has been working hard during pre-season and is raring to go.”Some players and spectators reckon that winning the Charity Cup can be a jinx heading into the league; case and point with last year’s winners,Dandy Town, who spluttered in their quest for successive league titles.Cougars have kept much of the squad which almost won everything in sight last term, while also adding a few pieces to the puzzle for depth. The same can’t be said for Trojans, however, who lost several starters as well as bringing in a new coach in Danvers Seymour jr.Jensen Rogers and Malachi Jones headed to PHC, while Tyrell Burgess returned to North Village after one season and Tahj Wade, Henry Santucci and Jonathan Bean moved to Ireland Rangers.Defender Ijahmon Mallory is also seeking a fresh start at newly-promoted Hamilton Parish.Cougars coach Dennis Brown echoed his skipper’s sentiments on the approach to the game.“We are looking to work on our consistency in simplifying our game and team cohesion in preparation for a season where we will be a target because of our success from last season,” said Brown. “I will be looking to the Dudley Eve for match fitness and will get as many players into the match as possible.“I would also like to wish my nephew, Danvers jr, good luck for the season. Like any other match we go into it to win.”The Charity Cup was first played in 1984 and Southampton Rangers won against Trojans. While acknowledging the proverbial jinx tag attached to opening night success, Caisey said he wasn’t worrying about what the future holds.“ Yes, we want to win as it is important to start the season off on a good note, but also we want to go out and see how far along we are in our preparation for the season.“We know that a lot of teams will be looking to give us their best shot and we are well aware of the situations that can potentially happen throughout a campaign, but we just want to play this match and go from there.“There isn’t pressure by any means, win or lose.”Kick-off time is 8pm.
