Weeks hails youth footballers

Shadow Sports Minister Michael Weeks has congratulated the Bermuda national academy football teams on their recent overseas success. The Under-12 and Under-13 boys were crowned champions at the Naples Cup in Florida after finishing undefeated, while the Under-14s missed out on making it a clean sweep for Bermuda when they were defeated in the semi-final.The Under-15s also grabbed a top-four finish in the inaugural CONCACAF Under-15 Championships in the Cayman Islands. The Naples Cup featured quality opposition throughout the region.Weeks applauded their achievements, saying: “On behalf of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party (PLP) I would like to welcome our young athletes home. Like all Bermudians, we followed the exploits of the Bermuda National Academy Under-12, Under-13 and Under-14 teams at the Naples Cup in Florida as well as Bermuda’s Under-15 team at the CONCACAF tournament in the Cayman Islands.“Their achievements highlight the fact that a majority of our young males are doing very well and making a positive mark on our Island.“Academic, athletic and social achievement by our young people rarely makes the headlines. Despite this, these young people represent their generation, not the small percentage who are participating in violent crime and other untoward behaviour.“I wish to thank our teams for the fine way they have represented our country. I encourage them to continue their efforts and be the shining lights for Bermuda’s future.”In the Under-12 final, Bermuda cruised past Englewood Rays 7-0 to seal the championship. That match was followed by a 1-1 draw with second-placed Mako Sharks in the Under-13 division, a result that gave Bermuda the title. In the Under-14 semis, Bermuda went down 2-0 to Leg AZ Caimans.
