Wells to be put on the spot

Nahki Wells will take any penalties for Huddersfield Town from now on, after Emyr Huws’s costly miss against Bristol City on Saturday.

Huws had the opportunity to draw his side level when Wells was fouled in the eleventh minute, after Bristol had taken an early lead.

The midfielder’s miss, however, was just one of a number of chances that Huddersfield failed to take in their 2-1 defeat.

Wells injured an ankle on Saturday, and is a doubt for today’s match against Rotherham United, but if fit he will be tasked with taking the penalties.

“If Nahki Wells is on the pitch and he is happy, then he will take it,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“You don’t always know what will happen in a game and for that reason you can’t say [for definite], but Nahki will normally be first.

“He has been doing a good job in the last few matches, he scored at Birmingham and he has had other chances.”

Wagner, who told Huws to take the penalty, said the miss was a turning point in the game, but felt his side still did enough to have come away with at least a draw.

“In Germany the fouled striker wouldn’t normally take a penalty, but I will speak to Nahki and we’ll go from there,” he said.

Huws, who is on loan from Wigan Athletic, is unlikely to be fit for today’s game after picking up a hamstring injury against Bristol City.

Huddersfield are trying to avoid suffering a fifth straight loss at home for the first time since the 2000-01 season, when Steve Bruce was in charge.

And Wagner said his side have to start at a much higher tempo against Rotherham, while also improving their defending at set pieces.

“To be fair, our defending at set pieces in the previous matches has been good, so it was disappointing to concede two goals that way and we have to work on that,” Wagner said.

n Rai Simons is likely to find himself starting on the bench again tonight as Chesterfield travel to Walsall for their FA Cup second round replay.

Simons came on in the 68th minute against Bury on Saturday, in a game Chesterfield lost 1-0.

Lee Novak, the Chesterfield striker, could return to the side after recovering from a calf injury, although Ollie Banks, the midfielder is a doubt, as is Richard Wood, the defender on loan from Rotherham.

Today’s meeting will be the third between the two sides in the past couple of months, with Chesterfield beating Walsall in the league in October, before the two sides drew 1-1 in the FA Cup at Chesterfield earlier this month.
