Willie Clemons’s flashy hairstyle was not the only thing that stood out during Bermuda’s monumental victory over Dominican Republic at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago on Sunday.

The midfielder’s superb display also set him apart from the rest and could not have come at a better time with so much at stake for Kyle Lightbourne’s side.

Clemons was Bermuda’s main sparkplug in the middle of the park where he threw himself into tackles, linked up play and ran his socks off as though his life depended on it to help Bermuda clinch their spot at the Concacaf Gold Cup for the first time.

“I just show up for work, do my job and go home like everyone else,” Clemons said.

“You just have to make sure you’re doing everything to help the man next to you. If all 11 of us do that, we get results like this one [a 3-1 win over the Dominican Republic].”

Lightbourne singled out Clemons for special praise after his effervescent performance in the Bermuda midfield.

“Willie Clemons was immense for us,” he said. “He was ready for anything and broke up the play.”

Bermuda came from behind to beat the Dominican Republic in their final Concacaf Nations League qualifier.

After falling behind to a fortuitous third-minute strike from Enmy Pena, Bermuda rallied with Zeiko Lewis equalising shortly after, before second-half goals from Nahki Wells and substitute Justin Donawa.

“It’s a great feeling; I’m proud to be a part of something like this at this moment,” Clemons added.

“I’m still at a loss for words. There aren’t any that can do it justice.

“The pictures tell it all. The work is just starting for us; it’s only the beginning.”

The 24-year-old penned a two-year deal with Bodens last April, helping them win the Division 2 Norra to secure promotion to the Swedish third tier.

He scored on his debut during Bodens’ opener away to Hudiksvall, the first of his nine goals in 31 league appearances, and was also chosen as the league’s best midfielder for the 2018 campaign.

The Gold Cup, which will be held from June 15 to July 7 in the United States, is a biennial competition for teams in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Bermuda finished fifth in the Nations League qualifying standings and will play in group A of that competition, starting in September.
