Postponements continue to pile up across football calendar

The Bermuda Football Association’s match schedule was thrown into more disarray last night when the Premier Division match between Robin Hood and Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field was postponed.

“The Premier Division match scheduled for tonight at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm between Robin Hood vs Somerset Eagles has been postponed,” read a BFA statement. “A rescheduled date is yet to be confirmed.”

The BFA did not provide reasons for calling off the game and have yet to respond to The Royal Gazette’s queries concerning the matter.

It is the fifth match postponed in six days.

The Premier Division matches pitting PHC Zebras against Devonshire Cougars and St George’s against Devonshire Colts at the weekend were postponed due to positive cases of Covid-19.

The BFA confirmed that several Devonshire Colts players had tested positive but did not specify which team had been impacted among PHC and Cougars.

The First Division match between Paget and Vasco was also postponed at the weekend with the BFA not providing reasons even after being approached by The Royal Gazette in this instance.

St George’s also had their rescheduled match against Somerset Trojans on Wednesday called off because of positive Covid-19 results in the Somerset team.

The global pandemic has wreaked havoc on local football which was first impacted when the 2019-20 season was brought to a halt in March 2020 with a round of league fixtures and the FA Cup Final remaining.

The 2020-21 season lasted until December 6, 2020 when a second wave of Covid-19 again brought proceedings to a halt and ultimately spelt the end of the campaign, which was confirmed three months later.

The pandemic also forced the cancellation of the Charity Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy competition in September and delayed the start to the 2021-22 season until October 30.

The latest spike in Coronavirus cases has prompted the government to impose further restrictions at sporting events.

The new requirements include additional protocols for large group exemptions, while spectators are now also required to present a SafeKey and negative antigen test for access.
