Heritage pair in Pacers squad

Top boy, top girl: Outerbridge and Tuzo will represent Bermuda Pacers at a track meet in Florida today

Ryan Outerbridge and Selah Tuzo, the boys and girls winners during Monday’s Junior Heritage Classic race, are in an eight-member Bermuda Pacers track team that will compete in a track meet today in Florida.

The team, accompanied by coaches Cal Simons and Gina Evans, left Bermuda yesterday for the Central Florida Gliders’ 23rd annual Spring Track Classic at the Lake Brantley High School Campus Stadium in Altamonte Spring.

It will be the club’s first appearance at the prestigious track meet that attracts more than 1,000 athletes from the United States and Caribbean.

Outerbridge, 12, was the overall winner of the two-mile race on Bermuda Day, clocking a time of 11:25 while Tuzo, 11, tied the girls record when she ran to her third straight victory in a time of 12:14.

Tuzo’s time was 32 seconds faster than her winning time last year, and with four more years of eligibility in the annual race, it seems certain that she will one day break Scraders’s record.

Monday’s win was also her third straight victory, first winning in 2013 in a time of 12:16 though on a slightly shorter course.

Afterwards, Tuzo’s mother, Tanika White paid tribute to Pacers and Simons.

“I really give Pacers a lot of credit, especially Mr [Cal] Simons, they have been wonderful working with my daughter,” she said.

The Pacers team will compete in 22 individual events and one 4x400 metre relay. Tuzo, Outerbridge and Jayden Ming are the long distance trio while the team also includes sprinters Zakayza Parsons, Taylor Hines and Clevonte Lodge; middle distance runner Sajan Harvey and thrower LeeKaysia Burch.

Burch will be making her first international appearance for the Pacers and will compete in the 13-14 girls shot and discus.
