The Bermuda junior squash team flew to the Cayman Islands yesterday for the start of the Caribbean Junior Championships.

Patrick Foster, the director of squash, and touring professional Michah Franklin are accompanying the 12-strong squad, who will compete in individual and team events.

Bermuda will face reigning champions Guyana, as well as coming up against tough opposition from Jamaica, Trinidad and hosts Cayman, while also having to see off challenges from OECS, Barbados and the Bahamas.

“We have a young talented team that have trained really hard over the past few months,” Franklin, who has been coaching the team, said. “I expect all of them to perform well, but we are well aware of the standard of our opposition and the size of the task ahead.

“We have some players earning their first international caps who will definitely be feeling the pressure, but we also have some seasoned travelers who know what expected and so we will be calling on them to deliver big performances.

“I’m excited to support the kids and cheer Bermuda on as always.”

The championships begin today and run until next Sunday. Full coverage is available at the official event website.
