Matt Thompson led the way for the Bermuda team as they underwent hot and windy conditions at the ITU World Long Course Triathlon Championships in Penticton, Canada.

Thompson finished the 3km swim, 120km bike and 30km run in 6hr 53min 8sec to take 15th place in the men’s 45-49 age group and 112th overall.

Geoff Smith finished 28th in the men’s 50-54 age group, despite suffering from stomach troubles. His time was 7:19:02, good enough for 219th overall.

Chris Eaton had a solid race. As expected, he trailed after the swim but made up time on the bike and run to finish 42nd in the men’s 45-49 age group in 7:23:38. Joel Matthews finished 52nd in the competitive men’s 35-39 age group in 8:07:34.

Louise Wells also suffered from stomach cramps on the run, but recovered well in the later stage. She finished 24th in the women’s 40-44 age group in 8:02:59.

Jen Wilson finished 34th in the women’s 40-44 age group in 8:32:56.

In the women’s 55-59 age group, Sue Edney got off to a difficult start as she was kicked in the head by a male competitor that left a bump and a cut on her forehead. She lost valuable time on the swim treading water and then suffered a little as a consequence on the bike and run. She still produced a good performance to finish 23rd in 8:39:52.

The overall winners were Lionel Sanders, of Canada, who made up a three-minute deficit on the run to catch Australia’s Josh Amberger on the last lap of the run. Sarah Crowley, of Australia, also produced a spectacular run to win the women’s professional division.
