Wedco puts Ireland Island housing project out to tender

The tendering process for a new housing development on Ireland Island has begun. An advertisement placed in the Official Gazette by Wedco, sought contractors to erect a fence or barrier to separate the construction site from nearby housing units.A section of the advertisement read: “The tender is for the temporary construction fence/ barrier for the housing project.“The location of the proposed fence/ barrier is on the site of the existing Victoria Row units and will separate the construction activities from the existing units and tenant’s activities.”Tender documents are available at Wedco’s Dockyard offices, and can be collected between 8am and 4pm.Bids are due by Friday, September 7, and potential contractors must provide a full company profile. The 100-unit housing project, intended to replace the 140-year-old Victoria and Albert Rows, was first announced in 2010.Work on the site was originally expected to be completed by April of this year but was set back by planning and economic issues.Public Works Minister Michael Weeks announced in May that work on the $36 million project would begin this summer. The development became the subject of heated debate following the announcement, with the One Bermuda Alliance criticising the cost and scale of the project and alleging that the project had not been properly tendered for the prefabricated structure.Government responded that the Wedco project was aimed at improving the lives of Bermudians while creating jobs, and said the Opposition was using the development as a political football.
