Woman accused of $75,000 blackmail scheme

A woman appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday accused of a blackmail demand for $75,000 from a father and daughter.Lu Zhao, 35, was charged with making an “unwarranted demand with menaces” to the man between May 19 and June 12.She was also charged with making a demand for cash from his 36-year-old daughter on June 22.The court heard that Ms Zhao, from Paget, was alleged to have asked for a total of $75,000 from the two, also from Paget, in exchange for not going to police to claim the father had assaulted her.She was said in court to have been given $25,000 by the man, but did not get any money from his daughter.Ms Zhao did not enter a plea as the case must be heard in the Supreme Court.Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe adjourned the case until August 3 and released the defendant on $10,000 bail.He also ordered her to hand over her passport and to have no contact with the alleged victims.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
