Hit and run driver leaves 25-year-old woman bruised and battered
A young woman was knocked off her bike by a hit-and-run driver who left her lying bleeding in the road.Avita O’Connor, 25, sustained facial injuries and bruising in the collision on St David’s Road around 11.20pm on Wednesday. She was heading east and coming round a corner near Emily’s Bay Lane when a car pulled out of a side road on the left, straight in front of her.“When I went down I slid face-forward. By the time I got up, the car was gone,” she said. “It was a black car and I didn’t have a chance to see the licence plate. I believe the car lights were dim, I don’t believe they were fully on.”Ms O’Connor is not sure whether the driver saw her coming round the corner, but believes they must have noticed the collision.“After I stopped sliding it was raining that night I got up. I didn’t feel any pain and I didn’t realise my face was messed up, so I got back on my bike and rode home. I didn’t think I’d suffered what I did,” she explained.“I couldn’t believe that somebody wouldn’t at least check to see if I was OK or even let someone else know.”The accident happened as Ms O’Connor, a Supreme Court clerk from St David’s, was travelling home from a friend’s birthday party. In addition to the cuts and bruising to her face, she also suffered a large bruise on her thigh and her auxiliary cycle is a write-off.She later attended the hospital for treatment to her injuries.“Surprisingly I haven’t been in pain although I was in pain the first night,” she said. She reported the incident to the Police on Friday and is due to file a statement tomorrow.“The Police haven’t heard anything and they did say it would be hard [to find the culprit] seeing as I didn’t have chance to see the licence plate,” she said.A Police spokesman said: “Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision or anyone with any information to contact Pc Junior Warner at Southside Police Station on 293-2222.”
