It’s about to get noisy – for real

Welcome return: supporters are set to return to football stadiums after December 2 under new government guidelines. Brighton & Hove Albion trialled how that might work in an approved testing in a friendly against Chelsea in August

Here we go again...football fans across England have once again had their hopes raised of making a return to stadiums and watching live action.

After the failed attempt to reintroduce fans in October, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has revealed the Government’s latest plan to allow fans to return to stadiums, albeit in small numbers, after the end of the latest lockdown on December 2.

Under a newly planned tier system all clubs in areas which fall into Tier 2 will be allowed up to 2,000 supporters into their grounds or up to 50 per cent of the total capacity — whichever is greater.

In the Premier League, that means that while fans of both Manchester clubs are set to miss out, supporters of London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Spurs and West Ham, as well as others such as Brighton, Everton, Liverpool and Southampton will be allowed to return under the new rules.

"Fans have been greatly missed at Premier League matches and therefore we welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding the return of supporters for the first time since March, albeit at small numbers,“ read a statement from the Premier League.

Today

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

4pm

Palace will be desperate to make amends after a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Burnley on Monday evening, the hosts first victory all season.

Crucially talisman Wilfried Zaha was absent from the Eagles’ line-up as a result of the player self-isolating. There is no confirmation as yet to whether he will be back for the visit of Newcastle with the club hopeful the forward will return a negative result ahead of the encounter.

His omission would be a huge boost for Newcastle who are in their search of a first victory at Selhurst Park in six attempts as well as first win on the Road in four games.

Prediction: 1-1

Tomorrow

Brighton & Hove Albion v Liverpool

8.30am

Brighton will be aiming to claim a first top-flight victory over Liverpool having failed to do so in seven previous attempts.

Unfortunately for the hosts, Liverpool’s injury crisis is set to be eased with the return of striker Mohamed Salah, who is likely to start, having returned from a period of self-isolation, while Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara could also return in midfield.

Brighton moved away from the relegation zone with a welcome 2-1 victory away to inconsistent Aston Villa last time out, their first win in seven games.

However, they face an uphill struggle to claim consecutive league wins for the first time in more than a year.

Prediction: 0-2

Manchester City v Burnley

11am

Burnley travel to Manchester with renewed confidence having climbed out of the drop zone with a first victory of the season on Monday.

However, to secure a second successive victory Sean Dyche’s men will have to halt an eight-match winless run against City, who are also unbeaten in their last two matches at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite the poor historic form, Burnley may take heart from City’s uncharacteristic poor start to the season, which has left them in thirteenth place in the standings, having won just three of their eight games so far.

A 2-0 defeat away to table-topping Tottenham at the weekend also left Pep Guardiola’s men eight points adrift of the summit with people already questioning their title credentials this season.

Prediction: 2-0

Everton v Leeds United

1.30pm

Everton finally halted their worrying run of form with a narrow 3-2 victory away at struggling Fulham, a first win in five.

However, manager Carlo Ancelotti would have been far from satisfied with the performance, with the hosts spurning the chance to snatch a point with another missed spot kick.

They welcome unpredictable Leeds to Goodison Park with the visitors themselves winless in three. An encouraging 0-0 draw with Arsenal stopped a sequence of back-to-back defeats in which Marcelo Bielsa’s side conceded eight goals in the process.

They will be aiming to build on that performance as they attempt to end a five-match winless streak against the Toffees.

Leeds are set to be without key midfielder Kalvin Phillips, while the Everton and France left back Lucas Digne will miss out after requiring ankle surgery.

Prediction: 2-1

West Bromwich Albion v Sheffield United

4pm

This is already somewhat of a crucial encounter at the wrong end of the table with both teams desperate for the points.

Both are still in search of their first win this season with basement-boys Sheffield United having only taken a single point from their nine matches so far.

West Brom - sitting a place above United - haven not fared much better claiming three draws to account for their points total thus far.

Worryingly for manager Chris Wilder, United have suffered four straight defeats and have not won away from home in their previous ten league matches.

However, West Brom have hardly enjoyed great success at home with Slaven Bilic’s side failing to win at The Hawthorns in their past six league games.

Prediction: 1-1

Sunday

Southampton v Manchester United

10am

In-form Southampton will be aiming to stretch their unbeaten streak to seven matches when they welcome improving Man United to St Mary’s.

The Saints are proving one of the season’s surprise packages sitting in fifth-place, just three points adrift of leaders Tottenham.Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have also won three of their four home matches this season.

Back-to-back league wins have resulted in United moving in the right direction up the table in recent weeks and they could climb as high as sixth, a point adrift of Sunday’s hosts, with another three points.

Previous meetings favour Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who have not suffered defeat against the Saints in their past nine league meetings.

Prediction: 2-2

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur

12.30pm

Ahead of a trip to his former side José Mourinho appears to have rediscovered his managerial mojo after guiding Tottenham to the top of the standings amid a brilliant run of form.

A comfortable 2-0 win over Man City on Saturday — a fourth straight win — extended Spurs unbeaten run to eight matches as they continue to demonstrate their title-challenge credentials.

However, they face another tough challenge to extend that sequence with Sunday’s hosts on their own superb run of form.

After a less than convincing start to the season, Chelsea have finally clicked, going unbeaten in seven unbeaten including three successive wins.

Tottenham are unbeaten in seven away from home but have failed to beat Chelsea in their previous three meetings.

Prediction: 2-2

Arsenal v Wolverhampton Wanderers

3.15pm

An interesting encounter at the Emirates pits two teams who are yet to really match preseason expectations against one other.

Arsenal have been blighted by inconsistency, winning just one of their last five league matches to leave Mikel Arteta’s side in twelfth place in the table.

Wolves, three places higher in the standings, have fared slightly better but have been far from convincing thus far, winning by more than a single-goal margin just twice this season.

Arsenal haven’t lost to Wolves in their previous two meetings but they are also winless at home in the past two games.

Prediction: 2-1

Monday

Leicester City v Fulham

1.30pm

Leicester will be confident of getting back to winning ways when they welcome struggling Fulham to the King Power Stadium.

Brendan Rodgers’s side saw a three-match winning run halted in disappointing fashion in a 3-0 defeat against a heavily understrength Liverpool on Sunday.

On paper a visit from eighteenth-placed Fulham would appear the perfect fixture to bounce back, with Scott Parker’s outfit having won only once all season, while claiming a single point on their travels.

However, misfortune has also played a role with back-to-back penalty misses proving costly in single margin defeats to West Ham and Everton in their past two matches.

Prediction: 2-0

West Ham United v Aston Villa

4pm

West Ham have made their best start to a Premier League season for five years and could go as high as fifth – depending on other results – if they make it three wins on the bounce with victory over Villa.

David Moyes’s men secured back-to-back 1-0 victories against struggling Fulham and Sheffield United either side of the international break and would welcome a repeat against inconsistent Villa.

West Ham could also be boosted by the expected return of striker Michail Antonio, who missed the last three games through injury.

The visitors have been more than guilty of going from the sublime to the ridiculous on more than one occasion this season, comfortably beating the likes of Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal before going on to lose to Leeds and Brighton.

Prediction: 1-1
