Lee ruled out after breaking leg

Bermuda's World Cup qualifying bid has been dealt a blow with the news that defender Roger Lee has suffered a broken leg.Lee sustained a fractured fibula while scoring his first goal for the University of Indianapolis during a 3-0 victory at Maryville Saint last Friday.Although the 20-year-old is expected to make a full recovery from the injury, he will almost certainly miss Bermuda's remaining four Group B qualifiers. The Somerset Eagles man had cemented his position as one of Devarr Boyles' first choice centre-halves a position Bermuda are hardly well-stocked making his unavailability all the more concerning.Boyles admitted Lee's absence would keenly felt but insisted the national team would simply have to cope without him.“As this relates to the World Cup team well, obviously that's a gap we now have to plug,” said Bermuda's head coach. “There are some other people that are hoping will make themselves available for the qualifiers.“To not have him available for an indefinite period, I don't want to say it's a challenge but will have to come up with a way to cope. It will give an opportunity to another player and that's the only way we can look at it.“Once he gets back to his school they will assess (his injury) further and we will get a bit more disclosure at our end.”Despite this setback, Boyles said Lee remained in good spirits having spoken to the injured player over the weekend.“You never expect this kind of thing to happen but he seems to be managing it very well,” he said. “From speaking to him, he was saying the injury itself was the result of a tackle.“He actually ended up scoring in the process; that was his last contribution for his team.”“It appears it's his fibula the small bone on the outside which has been broken in a spot where the success of it mending is very high, so we're encouraged by that.”Boyles praised Lee for his contribution to both the national programme and Bermuda Hogges before wishing him a speedy recovery.“Roger has been fantastic over the last three years,” he said. “He has been a constant in the national academy programme, captaining our Under-20s as well as being a regular starter for Bermuda Hogges for the past two seasons. I'm sure he will make a full recovery and hopefully he will be back soon.”Bermuda's next qualifiers are Trinidad on Friday, October 7, and Guyana on Tuesday, October 11. Both games will be held at the National Sports Centre.Rather than prepare for those games at home, it's understood Bermuda's squad will head to the Florida training camp where they trained ahead of their opening two qualifiers earlier this month. They lost both of those games 1-0 to Trinidad and 2-1 against Guyana.
