Sunshine expenses seem high
June 23, 2011Dear Sir,With regard to the article in The Royal Gazette on Wednesday, June 22nd regarding the closure of Sunshine League due to lack of funds to keep operating, I have to admit that found it quite surprising that 18 people are being let go when they were only housing eight children. This is a ratio of 2.25 people per child. As much as I realise it was a 24 hour care service24 hour care service and that the majority of these employees were part-time, it seems awfully high to me and I wonder if high overheads aren't one of the reasons why they now must end this service. They quote that it costs them between $75,000 and $100,000 to support each child. In my mind I'm thinking that they could find foster homes for these children and pay them this amount or even less.In these economic times, I'm sure there would be families willing to inject an additional $50,000 or $70,000 to their income and take in a homeless child.Perhaps the solution would be for all charities in Bermuda to advertise their financial statements once a year if they are to be granted Government funds and maintain their charitable status when accepting private donations.JUST CURIOUSWarwick
