Par 5 Golf Club honour players at Fallen Heroes Tournament

Members of the Par 5 Club executive hand over a cheque to their chosen charities

The Par 5 Golf Club recently remembered two of its members at the 2025 Fallen Heroes Tournament.

The tournament, in its 24th year, honoured Clyde Darrell, who worked as a tourism ambassador at Grotto Bay and Gladwyn Anderson, a long-serving employee at SAL Devonshire.

Ianthia Butler, the first female president of the club, is thrilled that the club chooses to remember its members in this way.

“To date, we’ve had two members pass away this year and 28 in total who have passed,” Butler said.

“It’s extremely important and a lot of our fallen heroes still have family members at the club, mostly their children but some grandchildren. We do certain things for our fallen heroes and not just this golf tournament, we do guards at the funerals and the like.”

As well as honouring the past, the club contributes to the future with the Fallen Heroes Tournament raising $5,400 for two Bermuda charities.

“We had two beneficiaries, Tomorrow’s Voices and Focus Counselling Services, and we gave $2,700 to each charity,” Butler said.

“We like to pick a seniors organisation and a children’s organisation. One of our executive is a recovering addict and he recommended Focus, so we picked it as a chosen charity.

“We’ve given to 14 charities through the years and we have also given to one member to help him with his medical expenses. In total we’ve donated more than $50,000.”

There is no restriction to membership with forms available on the club’s website and Butler insists the club welcomes all new players, with her latest sign-ups coming from Bermuda’s emergency services.

“We are a social club and we have a wide mix of ages and probably 40 playing members and 20 non-playing members at the moment,” Butler said.

“We have members who are residents and non-residents and our newest and youngest members are a policeman and fireman. That is great to see and we hold the hope that we can pass this club on to younger players.

“We have a golf professional attached to the club and we play in various tournaments throughout the island. We’ve played in the Goodwill tournament and we try to support other clubs by fielding a team when they host events.

“Some players play a lot more than once a month and we have golf competitions between our members. We have monthly medals and club championships to decide our male and female champions.”
