Charlotte Millington takes on giants in road race

Cyclist Charlotte Millington is set to take to the roads of Asunción for the second time in a week at the Junior Pan American Games.

After finishing thirteenth in the time-trial last Sunday, Millington will be outnumbered by some high-powered teams as she competes solo for Bermuda in the road race.

But a week between races never means a week off the bike for elite cyclists and Millington has still been racking up the miles out in the suburbs of the Paraguayan city.

“It’s too busy to be riding in the city but we drove out to the country a couple of times to ride out there,” she said.

“It’s a lot quieter and a different feeling out there as the traffic is too hectic in the city to be riding in the middle of it.

“We did two 55-mile rides and a couple of 20-mile rides, not super intense but a few efforts and a few intervals to keep everything ticking over but still keeping everything fresh until Sunday.”

Millington was pleased with her effort in the time-trial but faces more competition this time with her chance of making an impact dependent on her ability to keep pace at the front of the peloton.

“I thought the time-trial went well but obviously there will be more riders in the road race,” she said.

“I’m feeling good and it’s warmed up a little bit, which is good as it was freezing for the time-trial.

“I’m going to have to keep an eye on teams like Colombia, who have maybe five or six riders as you don’t want to let one of them get away if you can help it because none of their team is going to help chase.

“My goal is just to be at the front and see what I can do. I’m not going to be able to chase everything myself but I can try and use some of the other teams to my advantage.”

Millington’s chance to make it into the top ten may depend on her ability to make it into any successful breakaway.

“You never really know which break is the right one until it’s gone but I’m going to try not to let these teams go,” Millington said.

“If a Colombian or a Chilean rider gets away that doesn’t leave too many teams left to chase. It’s the same flat course as the time-trial so I am expecting it to be pretty much sprinting apart from the turnarounds and the start.”
