Bermuda will be hoping to continue their winning ways at the Caribbean Football Union Girls Under-14 Challenge Series when they take on Aruba at Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday.

The young Lady Gombey Warriors are heading into the Tier I group B contest high on confidence after prevailing 2-0 against the host country at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain in their previous outing on Sunday.

“Going into the game with Aruba we are just looking to play our way,” Bermuda coach Don Vickers told The Royal Gazette.

“We have a game model that doesn’t change regardless who we play against. We are looking to play and focus on the process and then the execution will hopefully lead to what we are looking for.

“Ultimately this is about experience for the girls to get their feet wet in international competition, and if we go in and do what we have to do I think we can possibly get a result against Aruba and see how it goes from there.”

Bermuda picked up their first win of the tournament in the 2-0 win over Trinidad on strikes either side of half time from Mia Daponte and captain Avery Taylor.

Forward Daponte broke the deadlock moments before the interval before midfielder Taylor scored from a 68th minute free- kick to double Bermuda’s advantage and Vickers hailed his players’ performance.

“I thought we completely dominated them although we gave them chances due to a bit of sloppy play,” he said.

Bermuda were on the back foot in the competition after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Jamaica in their opening Tier I group B match at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva the previous day, with Nycolette Prendergrass scoring the winning goal for Jamaica in the 57th minute.

Jamaica were reduced to ten players when goalkeeper Mikalia Banton was sent off after picking up a second booking in the closing stages of the match, but Bermuda were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage as their opponents held on for the win.

“We could have done a bit more,” Vickers said. “We would have liked to get at least a draw and I think we were very close to doing that.”

At the conclusion of the group stage, the group winners and runners-up will progress to the semi-finals, with the final scheduled to take on Sunday.

Teams finishing in third place will head into a play-off for fifth position with the sides occupying fourth place, playing in a match to decide the destination of the wooden spoon.

Bermuda’s Under-14 girls team are hoping to go one better than their male counterparts, who came up just shy of glory in Trinidad a year ago after losing to Barbados on penalties (4-3) in the final after the match ended goalless in normal time.
