Nahki Wells praises Nathan Trott for ‘some of best saves I’ve seen’

Nathan Trott concentrates between the posts for Cardiff City

Nahki Wells has praised his compatriot Nathan Trott, whose heroics inspired unbeaten Sky Bet League One leaders Cardiff City to victory over Luton Town on Saturday.

Trott, who was given the award for man of the match, produced a string of fine saves as Cardiff edged their hosts 1-0 at Kenilworth Road.

“We had some big moments in the game that we didn’t take, myself included,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“I had a few opportunities which I felt on another day I should have tested Nathan more.

“But also it was one of those days where it just felt like no one was ever going to score through him. He made some of the best saves I’ve ever witnessed on a football pitch and just looks so confident in goal, so I have to give credit where credit is due.

“He was man of the match, without a doubt, and made some big saves in big moments for his team. He was brilliant and I caught up with him after the game.”

Trott has kept four clean sheets and conceded just twice in five appearances since returning to English football with Cardiff on a season-long loan from Danish champions FC Copenhagen last month.

Wells feels that Cardiff are a far stronger side with the 26-year-old stopper between the posts.

“Cardiff have got themselves a really good player on their hands and I think with him in their side he makes them a lot stronger considering they are suspect to conceding because they are quite open and fluent on how they play,” Wells said.

Trott’s previous experience playing in Britain was with West Ham and AFC Wimbledon and he has also been capped for England up to under-21 level.

Cardiff secured their second victory on the road in a week thanks to midfielder Chris Willock’s 68th-minute strike, which propelled them to the top of the table, but Luton have dropped to eleventh.

“I’m obviously disappointed that we didn’t get the win but full credit must go to Cardiff as they performed really well and caused us a lot of problems,” Wells said.

The 35-year-old striker is happy to be back on the pitch having rejoined Matt Bloomfield’s squad in the lead-up to the match after missing the Hatters previous two fixtures through a muscle strain.

“I didn’t feel at my absolute best because of the lack of preparation, but I feel good,” Wells said.

“I didn’t have any issues in the game and I should feel better for it at the end of this week with another full week’s training back with the team.”

Wells’s speedy recovery will come as a relief to national coach Michael Findlay as the former captain has made himself available for the Gombey Warriors’ crucial final round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers next month.

“Nothing has changed and I will be coming back because it was a niggle and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“As long as I didn’t have any complications in that time period then that’s another story, but at the moment I’ll definitely be back and focused on playing the game against Jamaica, and then taking it from there.

“First and foremost the game against Burton Albion that we have on Saturday will have my full focus. If I can get that out of the way and get us up and running with three points, then I can come back in a really good place.”

The Gombey Warriors will kick off the final stage of World Cup qualifying when they host Jamaica at Flora Duffy Stadium on September 5.
