Fine for woman who admitted driving while impaired
A woman who lost control of her car and later admitted drinking alcohol while pregnant was fined $1,500 yesterday.
Shalaya Pendleton, 26, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to having care and control of a vehicle while impaired.
The court heard that police were on patrol on Front Street, Hamilton, when they saw a car that had mounted the kerb at the junction of Front Street and Parliament Street.
Officers questioned Pendleton after seeing her exit the vehicle, which was on top of a bollard post.
Pendleton said she had been trying to reverse the car.
When officers asked her if she had consumed any alcohol, she said: “I had three drinks of alcohol and a bunch of shots.”
Police arrested Pendleton for having care and control of a vehicle while impaired by alcohol.
While being transported to Hamilton Police Station, Pendleton told officers that she was five months pregnant and that this was her last night of drinking.
The incident happened on October 9 last year.
Magistrate Craig Attridge ordered Pendleton, from Warwick, to pay the fine by the end of the year.
He also banned her from the roads for 18 months.
