Guests to get hands-on at Masterworks fundraiser

Art is not rigid: guests will don protective suits and add their brushstrokes to a giant shared canvas at Gabriela Brunner’s Masterworks fundraiser, Art After Dark on October 25 (Photograph supplied)

Colour, sound and movement will converge at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art on October 25, when Gabriela Brunner stages Art After Dark, a fundraiser in support of the Paget gallery’s educational programmes. Guests will don protective suits and bootees before taking brushes to a giant shared canvas and adding their own strokes — no experience is necessary. The artist told The Royal Gazette that, along with drinks, canapés and creative expression, the evening promises plenty of fun.

Q: What's Art After Dark about?

A: The idea behind it is to bring art to the broader community in a way that is a bit different. We're going to give people an opportunity to experience that — everybody can be a part of it; they can feel as if they’re making it without boundaries.

Q: When you say “without boundaries”, you mean they can do what they want?

A: Exactly. They can do whatever they want. They can use paint [and] how the paint gets on the canvas is [up to them to decide]. It's all about experiences. It's all about connecting with yourself, and then letting that [emotion] out by putting paint on the canvas. It's a great experience. I [hosted] a lot of workshops in the past and it's all about discovering a little bit of the unknown within yourself. It’s a great opportunity to really discover what hinders you, and fully let go and have fun.

Q: What do you hope people take away from the experience?

A: It’s an opportunity to bring art closer; to make people understand that art is not rigid. You don't have to be able to draw, or paint a certain way. You can just like, have fun with it. It's all about exploring where art actually comes from — and that's within you, not somebody telling you to draw a frog or whatever else. It's all about discovering where art comes from. And that's from within.

Q: What motivates you to host events like this?

A: I love to bring people out of their comfort zone, where they can discover, “Hey, I can do something too”. To help them discover their inner fears, for example, or where they're holding back. And art is one of the best ways to discover that.

Q: Do you teach a lot?

A: For more than 30 years, I have been teaching art, been an artist, a sculptor, a designer etc. I don't limit myself to one media. Teaching and sharing my knowledge, I think, is extremely important. The younger generation, and even people my age, need to be inspired, and it is up to us who have the experience to share our knowledge. So many of us are scared to do [certain things] everyone will have the opportunity, on that night, to really let go and have fun.

Q: And it's for charity?

A: Yes, the proceeds all go to [Masterworks’] new art and design centre.

Q: Is the work going to then be on display for a while?

A: Once it's dry, we're going to cut it into pieces and then the idea is that each individual that participated gets a piece of it.

Q: The photos show people in protective suits. How messy does it get, and is it the kind of event where someone might even end up rolling on the canvas?

A: I did a [similar] workshop with about 150 women at a conference and everybody had beautiful little cocktail dresses on and high heels. That's one of the reasons why you put on that protective suit with a hood and bootees, so that nothing can happen to you should the paint go in directions that you can’t control, and so you always stay clean. But I had one case where a woman got so into it that she started to roll herself, not in paint, but on the canvas. And we had paint going through the seams onto her beautiful dress.

Q: You’ve mentioned that sound is part of the experience. How does music play into it?

A: The whole thing is accompanied by music. There's a specific style of music that really helps. There’s a connection between the beats and the rhythm, between music and the action of letting go. It's all a part of it.

Q: It's open to people of all ages?

A: Not children. It's an adult event held in the evening.

Q: What connected you to art?

A: I can't remember a day where I didn't draw — as a child, even. I'm 58 so you can imagine it's a long story. I always did it but there were times when it was more intense. I was always a creative person but [my interest in] painting, in the fine arts [started] really when I went to London and studied art in my 20s. I decided to focus on the arts when I was 27, but I had a career as a fashion designer before.

Q: What can guests expect from the evening?

A: I think it's going to be a great opportunity to get together with friends and have a great time and at the same time experience something they've never experienced before. There will be music and dancing and drinks and really, I think it's a great opportunity to come with friends, have a great night out and at the same time support our cause to raise funds for the art and design centre. And it's not only raising funds, but also awareness.
