Public art proposal for Parsons Road Playground

A new planning application has proposed installing a permanent art display and seating at a Pembroke playground.

The proposal, submitted by Burnt House Productions and the Bermuda Walls initiative, involves creating a concrete structure at the Parsons Road Playground which would offer both public seating and a rotating public art space.

The x-shaped structure would feature four vertical faces, each containing two framed art panels.

Documents included in the application said: “Each of the four faces will host curated art panels by local and international artists. The panels will be non-permanent, removable and replaced every five years as part of the Bermuda Walls rotating exhibition cycle.

“All works will be applied to removable aluminium or treated wood substrates. Artwork changes will be supervised by the Bermuda Walls curatorial team in collaboration with the Department of Parks.

“Each installation will include small identification plaques listing the artist’s name and artwork title.”

The application added that the structure would be built near the central lawn area of the playground to ensure it does not impede recreational activities or sight lines.

In addition to offering seating for park visitors and a curated platform for public art, the applicants said the proposal would serve as a “landmark instillation”, securing the park’s position as a community art hub.
