Lindo’s to Lindo’s returns to the streets
The annual Lindo’s to Lindo’s race ais to return this weekend, raising funds to support the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
The 27th iteration of popular event is scheduled to kick off at 8.30am on Sunday, but the early-bird sign up period will close on Friday.
Lori Rockhead, the executive director of the Bermuda Diabetes Association, said: “We’re seeing numbers jump up this year and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic turnout.
“After what has felt like a long-running feud with the forecast, the weather looks great for the weekend, so whether you’re running, walking competitively or taking part in the charity walk, it’s set to be a great morning outdoors for the whole community.”
Last year, the charity walk raised $30,000 for the Bermuda Diabetes Association, supporting nutritional counselling, diabetes screenings and free prescriptions for people without adequate insurance.
Zach Moniz, the general manager of Lindo’s, said: “Lindo’s to Lindo’s is a highlight of the calendar year for the island.
“It’s not just about fitness, it’s about bringing people together, raising awareness for a cause that affects one in eight Bermudians and having fun along the way.
“Families, schools, businesses and friends all come together for a shared purpose, showing the best of our community spirit.”
The Ministry of Public Works has urged motorists to take care on the roads this weekend when two road races are scheduled to take place.
The Bermuda Connection 5k and 10k are to set off at 7am on Saturday and expected to be complete by 11am.
The races will start at the entrance to the Hamilton Princess Beach Club on South Road and continue along Lighthouse Road, the Railway Trail, Church Road, Middle Road and South Road before reaching the finish line at Boat Bay.
Meanwhile the Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10k run and four-mile walk will kick off at 8.30am on Sunday and are expected to conclude by 10.30am.
The 10k race will start at Lindo’s Home Foods Store on Middle Road, Warwick and finish at Lindo’s Devonshire car park, travelling along Middle Road, South Road, Collector’s Hill, Chaingate Hill and Watlington Road East.
The four-mile walk will follow a similar route, diverting at Brighton Hill Road before rejoining Watlington Road East to the same finish location.
A Ministry of Public Works spokesman said: “There will be no road closures for either event, however, traffic will be under the control of race marshals and police officers.
“Motorists are expected to exercise caution and follow all instructions given by event officials to assist with traffic control and to avoid collisions with participants.”
Early-bird pricing of $35 per entry is available until March 6, and anyone donating $100 to the Bermuda Diabetes Association during registration will have their entry fee refunded.
Race numbers can be collected on Saturday from 8.30am to noon at the Jack King Building in the Botanical Gardens, and the first 1,000 participants to pick up their numbers will receive a goodie bag.
Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers in the 10k run, as well as the top two in each age division, while first and second-placed walkers in the four-mile competitive walk will be recognised.
All charity walk participants will be entered into a prize draw with a variety of rewards for adults and children including brunches, cases of wine, an Apple Watch, gift certificates, wellness experiences, overnight stays and family friendly activities such as dolphin encounters.
Parents, schools and teachers are encouraged to take part in the charity walk for a chance to win $1,000 for their school, with a prize going to the schools with the highest turnout.
