Organisers at the Carifta Aquatic Championships played the wrong Bermuda anthem when the island’s medley relay team picked up their gold medals on Saturday night.

All Hail Bermuda was played out over the loudspeakers by organisers in Martinique when Teagan Mewett, Marleigh Howes, Violet Smith and Katherine Wheddon stood on the top step of the podium.

The Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association had informed Carifta organisers before the event that God Save The King was the anthem to be played if Bermuda won any race at the Games.

Ben Smith, Opposition Leader and One Bermuda Alliance MP, is also the national swimming coach and confirmed that the wrong anthem had been played on the night.

“We provided God Save the King to the organisers,” Smith said.

“They played the wrong anthem on their own and we told them off after it happened.

“They did the same thing to Cayman and one other country, with the organisation really poor for this level of competition.”

There has been high-level discussion surrounding the national anthem used at major events, with a number of countries at the Commonwealth Games, including England, Scotland and Wales, all opting not to use God Save The King, the anthem used for Great Britain at major Games.
